Cleveland “Must Read” Christmas Gifts

I had the opportunity to read 4 books received from publishers Gray & Company that Clevelanders - past and present - would enjoy. With the Christmas holiday fast approaching, any of these four Cleveland-based books would be a welcome gift for that special Clevelander in your life!

My favorites – “Cleveland TV Tales” and “Cleveland TV Tales Volume 2”, both authored by Mike and Janice Olszewski (Gray & Company, Publishers). The first book gives an extensive background on the start of television in Cleveland, laced with stories about people whose names are easily recognizable to Clevelanders: Ghoulardi, Dorothy Fuldheim, Page Palmer, and Captain Penny, just to name a few. Volume 2 looks into more recent TV personalities of the 1970s-1990s. Being a lifelong Clevelander, born here in the mid-1950s, these books were a delight to read and brought me back to the time when there were few TV channels from which to chose and how local TV stars came to be. While these books are nostalgic for Cleveland “lifers” like me, they would still be very interesting to anyone who has spent any time in our wonderful city.

My husband is reading “Glory Days in Tribe Town: The Cleveland Indians and Jacobs Field 1994-1997” by Terry Pluto and Tom Hamilton (Gray & Company, Publishers). This book covers the Cleveland Indians in their first years in Jacobs Field and the period of winning seasons. (I remember it well!)  Pluto and Hamilton give a great behind the scenes look at what made the team tick, plus interesting commentary on how “Indians Fever” gripped the city. Sports fans will certainly enjoy reading these insights and reliving such an exciting time in Cleveland’s sports history. (As all Clevelanders know, winning seasons here for any sport have been hard to come by!)

And on the subject of sports: Every Cleveland Browns fan knows The Bone Lady. In fact, even non-Browns fans knows of her. She’s hard to miss on game day with her creative dog bone and Browns themed attire, an homage to the Browns “Dawg Pound.” Her book “The Bone Lady” by Derba Darnall (Gray & Company, Publishers), has the subtitle “Life Lessons Learned as One of Football’s Ultimate Fans.” This story tells how she evolved, both as a person and as The Bone Lady. It’s a fun read that tells of sports but also of personal discovery.

So if you’re stuck in what to get someone for a holiday gift, any one – or all four - of these books would make an affordable gift that would bring some Cleveland joy even after the holidays are over.

All four books are available in most local bookstores and at the following links:

Cleveland TV Tales

Glory Days in Tribe Town

The Bone Lady: Life Lessons Learned as One of Football's Ultimate Fans – A Memoir

(Please note: The link to Amazon is provided for your convenience: I receive no compensation or consideration from Amazon or anyone else if you purchase these books!

Enjoy!

Heinen’s Beautiful Downtown Cleveland Store

I’m a dedicated Heinen’s shopper and was thrilled when they opened a store in downtown Cleveland in the beautiful former Cleveland Trust (bank) rotunda. I finally got a chance to get to the store today and it is a stunning facility. The interior is a fresh, clean space with beautiful murals and stunning glass in the rotunda dome. And of course, it makes for a wonderful setting to display all kinds of foods. The second floor of the rotunda area is dedicated to wine, beer, and related items. It was almost overwhelming.

Here are a few photos. But the space should been seen firsthand to really be appreciated. While you visit the store, you won’t be able to walk out without buying something, especially if you pass the bakery counter!

This year, show your design skills – and make memories that are sure to “stick” around – by entering the Duck® brand Stuck at Prom® Scholarship Contest. Now in its 14th year, this contest is offering more than $50,000 in scholarship dollars to high school students in the United States and Canada.

And, as Duck Tape® is available in a vibrant assortment of colors, designs and licenses, high schoolers have everything they need to craft their prom fashions, from bright animal prints to glam geometrics. Plus, new innovative formats like Duck Tape® Sheets and Ducklings™ mini rolls make it easy to enhance designs with intricate detail.
“Since 2001, Duck® brand has awarded more than $250,000 in scholarship money to students and schools, and provided plenty of ‘promspiration’ for teen fashionistas. The Stuck at Prom® Scholarship Contest is our way of rewarding ingenuity in students, encouraging them to bring their imagination to life and providing the scholarship assistance they need – while helping them create a prom experience they’ll never forget,” said Ami DeWille, senior category manager of Duck Tape® at ShurTech Brands, LLC. “This year, we’re upping the ante by increasing the top three prize amounts. In total, more than $50,000 in scholarships is up for grabs.”

The Stuck at Prom® entry period starts March 10, 2014, and ends May 23, 2014. A panel of judges will then choose 10 finalist couples based on workmanship, originality, use of colors, accessories and use of Duck Tape®. Those couples will be narrowed down to Grand Prize, Second and Third place winners during a public online voting period on StuckAtProm.com, which will open on June 10, 2014, and end on July 8, 2014, with winners announced on or about July 16, 2014.

The Grand Prize winners will each receive a $10,000 scholarship; $5,000 will be awarded to the school that hosted the prom they attended. The second place award is $5,000 for each of the students and $3,000 for the school that hosted the prom, and both the students in third place will receive $3,000, with $2,000 going to the school that hosted the prom. “Prom is your time to shine, dazzle and wow,” said Michelle Lesniak, top fashion designer, winner of “Project Runway” Season 11, devoted Duck Tape® enthusiast and member of the 2014 Stuck at Prom® Scholarship Contest panel of judges. “No need to follow trends – start your own. Whether you love western rockabilly or the flapper dresses of the Roaring Twenties, the most important prom tip is to be yourself. Entering Stuck at Prom® is the perfect way to create a prom look that’s uniquely you.”

Don’t forget the Cleveland Rocks New Year’s Eve on Public Square celebration on December 31, 2013 at 8PM – it’s a new tradition! There will be more than 15 food trucks from around the Northeast Ohio area, and guests will have the opportunity to indulge in food from their favorite eateries, while hearing live performances throughout the evening from local DJs/Artist, including popular EDM group, Krewella. The event will also feature live ice sculpting, a beer garden, firework display, and countdown to midnight from Cleveland’s own, Drew Carey.

Take a look at the video – and make your plans to attend!

Christmas on Public Square, Cleveland Ohio

I haven’t had a chance as yet to get to Public Square in downtown Cleveland to see this season's Christmas lights. The weather turned very snowy in the last few weeks here in the snow belt, but I hope to see this year's display soon. In the meantime, here is one of my animated photos from a previous year.  Enjoy the holiday season!

This is a fine addition to Downtown Cleveland! (Click on any image to open a larger view in the photo gallery.)

Downtown Farmers Market returns to
Public Square this Friday!

WHAT: After a successful winter in the 5th Street Arcades, Downtown Farmers Market is excited to kick-off our fourth season on Public Square this Friday, June 7th.

Downtown Farmers Market is a producers-only market, meaning all of our vendors either make or grow the food themselves. Shoppers can expect fresh produce, grass-fed cheese, baked goods, herbs and spices, jams and jellies, hot sauces and salsas, snacks to take back to the office, and treats to keep you cool in the summer heat (ice cream, popsicles, and real fruit drinks - also made using local ingredients!).

Downtown employees can take a break from their busy workdays to enjoy live music and lunch on Public Square – we even offer picnic blankets for anyone looking to enjoy their lunch at the market. Lunch options include made-to-order rice bowls, Asian-inspired dishes, BBQ, sandwiches, and a diverse mix food trucks.

In addition, we also offer free monthly cooking classes lead by area chefs. Classes are free and open to the public and include a guided market tour, hands-on instruction in meal preparation and tips on how to grow produce easily at home. Attendees also receive a bag of produce from the market to take home with them. The cooking classes place the second Friday of the month, 1:30-3:30pm at Old Stone Church. Chef Ricardo Sandoval (Fat Cats, Felice Urban Café) will lead our first class on Friday, June 14th. For a full schedule, please visit our website here.

EBT, WIC, senior coupons and debit cards are accepted. EBT users will also receive “Produce Perks,” a dollar for dollar bonus (up to $10) to be spent on fresh fruits and vegetables. Produce Perks are available at area farmers markets while supplies last.

Cleveland Ohio Public Square c1910 Postcard Panorama

Here’s a scan of an old fold-out panorama postcard, circa early 1910s, of Cleveland’s Public Square that my mother unearthed while looking through some old family photos from the late 1800s-early 1900s. The postcard was slightly battered and worn, but it provides an interesting view of the city from a century ago. (Click on the image for a large view.)
